Trade-in and “We buy cars” ads that fill your used lot

Good used inventory is hard to find at auction and expensive when you do. The best source is often your own market. Here’s how to advertise for trade-ins and buy cars straight from local owners.

Buying vehicles from local owners usually costs less than auction, and you know more about where the vehicle has been. It also brings in people who may buy from you while they’re there. But owners don’t think of selling to a dealer unless someone asks them. That’s what trade-in and “We buy cars” ads are for.

Two kinds of ad

  • Trade-in ads speak to people who are ready to buy: “Your trade could be your down payment.”
  • “We buy cars” ads speak to anyone with a vehicle to sell, whether they buy from you or not: “We’ll buy your car, even if you don’t buy ours.”

Run both. Trade-in ads move vehicles off your lot; “We buy cars” ads fill it.

Offers that get owners to act

  • A fast written offer: “Get a written offer in 15 minutes.”
  • No obligation: “Even if you don’t buy from us.”
  • Payoff help: “Still making payments? We’ll handle the payoff.”
  • Lease-end help: “Lease ending? Your vehicle may be worth more than you owe.”
  • Demand for specific vehicles: “Wanted: trucks and SUVs under 100,000 km.” Be specific about what you really need. (Trucks sell fast; see pickup truck marketing ideas.)
  • An appraisal event on a set weekend, with coffee and a quick inspection.

Only promise what you deliver. If you advertise a bonus or a minimum value, honour it for everyone who qualifies, and put the conditions in the fine print.

Write the ad

  1. Headline: the promise. “We want your trade.” “We buy cars. Any make.”
  2. Image: keys changing hands, a clean used vehicle or your lot — something that says “easy”.
  3. One or two reasons: fast, fair, no obligation, payoff handled.
  4. One next step: a link to an online appraisal form or a number to text. Make it take under a minute.

The caption follows the same formula as any other post: a hook, the benefit and a clear next step. See how to write Facebook captions that sell cars.

Where to run them

  • Facebook and Instagram, every week or two, plus a Story version.
  • Google Business Profile, where people search “sell my car near me”. See Google Business Profile posts for car dealerships.
  • Your website, as a homepage banner linking to your appraisal form. See website banners.
  • Your service lane: a poster or counter card. Service customers with well-kept vehicles are ideal sellers. More ideas in service department marketing ideas.
  • Email to past customers whose vehicles are three to six years old.

When to push hardest

  • Tax refund season, when shoppers have a down payment and are ready to upgrade.
  • Spring and fall, ahead of the busy selling seasons.
  • Year-end, to stock up for January. See Black Friday and year-end sales event ads.

Then sell what you bought

A traded vehicle earns nothing until it’s sold. Post it the day it’s ready, print a clear window sticker (see used car window stickers and the FTC Buyers Guide), and follow the system in how to market used car inventory on social media.

Questions

Good to know

What should a trade-in ad say?

One clear promise, such as a fast written offer or an offer even if you don’t buy from us, plus how to get started: a link to an online appraisal form or a number to text.

Can I advertise a guaranteed trade-in value?

Only if you honour it. Avoid amounts like “$5,000 for your trade” unless every customer really gets it; say “top dollar” or “a written offer in 15 minutes” instead, and add any conditions in the fine print.

Where should trade-in ads run?

Facebook and Instagram, Google Business Profile, your website’s home page banner, your email list and your service lane, where owners of good used vehicles already visit.
