Pick the right warranty box

As Is – No Dealer Warranty

The dealer doesn’t provide a warranty for repairs after the sale. Some states limit or don’t allow As Is sales, so check your state’s rules.

Implied Warranties Only

For states that limit As Is sales: no promises from the dealer, but state law may give the buyer some rights for serious problems that weren’t apparent.

Dealer Warranty

Full or limited. For a limited warranty, list the percentage of parts and labor you’ll pay, each system covered and how long it lasts.

Printing it correctly

  • Print both sides (flip on the long edge): the front has the warranty, the back lists major defects and your contact details.
  • Black ink on white paper, letter size or larger.
  • Display it in the vehicle where shoppers can read it, usually in a side window.
  • Give a copy to the buyer. It becomes part of the sale contract, so update it if the deal changes the warranty.

This is general information, not legal advice. Your state may have additional rules. For the full picture, read window stickers and the FTC Buyers Guide, explained.

Need the window sticker too? The same VIN fills in a matching dealer window sticker with specs, equipment, EPA fuel economy and a QR code. Switch tabs above to see it.
Questions

Good to know

Who needs a Buyers Guide?

In the US, dealers who sell more than five used vehicles in a 12-month period must display a Buyers Guide on every used car, light truck and van they offer for sale. Dealers in Maine and Wisconsin use their state’s version.

Does this follow the official FTC form?

Yes. The text follows the FTC’s Buyers Guide (16 C.F.R. 455, as revised in 2016) word for word, in black ink on white, with the list of major defects on the back.

What’s the difference between As Is and Implied Warranties Only?

As Is means the dealer doesn’t provide a warranty for repairs after the sale. Implied Warranties Only is for states that limit or don’t allow As Is sales: the dealer makes no promises, but state law may still give the buyer some rights.

Is there a Spanish version?

This tool prints the English Buyers Guide. If you conduct the sale in Spanish, the FTC requires the Spanish version, which is available from the FTC.

Is it free?
