Short video ads for car dealers: Reels, TikTok and Stories
Video gets more reach than still images on almost every social platform. The good news: a dealership video ad doesn’t need a film crew. Here’s how to make short videos that get watched.
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok all push video, so a short clip of a vehicle usually reaches more people than the same vehicle in a photo. But most dealerships don’t have time to film, edit and caption a video for every unit and every sales event. You don’t have to. Short, simple videos made from your existing ads work, as long as they follow a few rules.

Three kinds of video worth making
- Animated ads (motion graphics): your ad’s headline, price and logo slide, fade or pop into place over the vehicle. Fast to make, always on-brand and perfect for sales events and offers.
- Cinematic clips: the camera slowly moves in on the vehicle while light glides across it, with music and an optional voiceover. Great for vehicle spotlights and new arrivals.
- Phone videos: a real walkaround, a delivery or a staff introduction, filmed on a phone. Raw and personal, and they build trust. Keep them under 30 seconds.
A good mix: animated ads and cinematic clips for your offers and inventory, and phone videos for the people and moments behind them.
Lengths and sizes
| Where | Shape | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Reels, Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts | 9:16 (1080 × 1920) | 6–15 seconds |
| Facebook & Instagram feed | 1:1 or 4:5 | 10–15 seconds |
| YouTube, your website | 16:9 (1920 × 1080) | 15–30 seconds |
On vertical videos, the app’s buttons and captions cover the top and bottom of the screen, so keep text in the middle. The car dealer ad size cheat sheet has the safe zones.
Win the first three seconds
- Show the vehicle immediately. No logo intro, no slow fade from black.
- Put the hook on screen: “Just arrived”, “$0 down this weekend”, “One owner, 41,000 km”.
- Make it work on mute. The message should be clear with the sound off; music and a voiceover are a bonus.
- End on the next step: the price, your logo and “Link in bio” or “Tap to see it”.
Video ideas for dealerships
- New arrival of the day, posted the day it hits the lot.
- Sales event countdown: the same design with “3 days left”, “2 days left”, “Last day”. Plan them with the dealer marketing calendar.
- Payment or rate offer, with the fine print on screen.
- Service special, like winter tires or a seasonal check. More in service department marketing ideas.
- Delivery day with a happy customer (with their permission).
- Customer review read out as a voiceover. See how to turn reviews into posts.

Write the caption, too
The video stops the scroll; the caption gets the click. Use a hook, the benefit and a clear next step, plus local hashtags on Instagram and TikTok. The formula is in how to write Facebook captions that sell cars.
Good to know
How long should a car dealer video ad be?
6 to 15 seconds for Reels, Stories and TikTok, 10 to 15 seconds in Facebook and Instagram feeds, and up to 30 seconds for YouTube or your website.
What size should a dealership video be?
Vertical 9:16 (1080 × 1920) for Reels, Stories and TikTok; square 1:1 or portrait 4:5 for feeds; widescreen 16:9 for YouTube and websites.
Do videos need sound?
Make them work without it. Many people scroll with the sound off, so put the key message on screen. Music and a voiceover are a bonus for people who turn the sound on.
